Net Neutrality – Position Statement

December 1st, 2009 (06:41 pm)

Argus and its affiliates support Network Neutrality also commonly referred to as “net neutrality” or “internet neutrality”.

Furthermore we oppose any local, state or federal legislation that would restrict such as the “Internet Freedom Act” sponsored by Republican Senator John McCain. Argus does support the FCC proposed Net Neutrality Rules.

What is Net Neutrality?

A principle proposed for user access networks participating in the Internet that advocates no restrictions on content, sites, or platforms, on the kinds of equipment that may be attached, and on the modes of communication allowed, as well as communication that is not unreasonably degraded by other traffic.

The principle states that if a given user pays for a certain level of Internet access, and another user pays for a given level of access, that the two users should be able to connect to each other at the subscribed level of access.

Who opposes Net Neutrality?

Your internet service provider most likely. Its in your internet service providers best interest to have legislation that regulates and violates the Net Neutrality principals. It would allow service provers to: slow peer-to-peer communication, discriminate against ftp access and online games and also allow billing cycles similar to cellular phone companies.
